The single most common complaint on a first snack import is not flavour, shelf life or paperwork. It is breakage. A buyer opens the container, pulls a carton from the middle of the stack, and finds packs that look fine from the outside but rattle like gravel. Nothing failed food-safety-wise; the product is simply broken, and broken crackers do not sell on a supermarket shelf. Good snack export packaging is the difference between a container that lands saleable and one that lands as an argument about who pays.

Fragility is not a defect in a cracker of this type. A tapioca-based cheese cracker is fried and dry, with very low moisture, which is exactly what gives it a snap and a twelve-month shelf life. The same structure that makes it crisp makes it brittle. So the job is not to make the product tough. The job is to build a system — primary film, headspace, carton, pallet, stow — where nothing loads the product directly.

Layer one: the pillow pack and the air inside it

For dry snacks the primary pack is doing three things at once: keeping moisture and oxygen out, keeping aroma in, and acting as a cushion. That last function is the one buyers underestimate.

A pillow pack that is properly inflated behaves like a small airbag. The crackers sit suspended in gas rather than pressed against each other, and impact energy spreads across the film instead of concentrating on one edge. Underfill the gas and you get a floppy pack where product grinds against product every time the carton is handled. Overfill it and the pack becomes a drum that resists stacking, splits at the seal under altitude or temperature change, and wastes carton volume.

Two practical points to raise with any Indonesian supplier before you commit:

  • Fill weight versus pack volume. Ask what net weight goes into what bag dimension. A 185 g family pack in a 18 x 26 x 6 cm format is a deliberately generous envelope for that weight — that spare volume is cushioning, not a short fill.
  • Gas flush. Ask whether packs are air-filled or nitrogen-flushed, and whether it is consistent across the shift. Nitrogen helps oil stability as well as protection; air-filled packs can still work for a twelve-month product, but oxygen and a cheese-containing fried snack are not natural allies.

Film structure matters too. Metallised laminate blocks light and gives a better oxygen barrier than clear film, which is why most Indonesian snack exporters use it. Ask about seal integrity testing rather than film specification alone — a good laminate with a weak back seal fails just the same.

Layer two: how product sits in the carton

This is where most damage actually happens. Product does not break at sea nearly as often as it breaks during handling: forklift stabs, drops onto concrete, being restacked at a consolidation warehouse, or being crushed by whatever the next importer's carton weighs.

Two variables control it. The first is orientation. Packs laid flat in stacked layers distribute weight through the carton walls. Packs stood on edge transmit weight straight down the column of product. For a brittle cracker, flat-laid layers with the pack seal running horizontally is nearly always the safer arrangement.

The second is void space. A carton with 30 mm of slack at the top lets everything inside move, and movement over a four-week ocean journey is abrasion. Cartons should be filled so the flaps close under light tension, without so much compression that the packs deform.

The relationship between pack size and carton fill is worth seeing in numbers. Our own two formats share one carton size, 43 x 34 x 30 cm, which simplifies loading and pallet patterns:

Note the gap between net and gross. On the 50 g format, packaging is more than a third of shipped weight — film, air and board. That is the physical cost of protection, and it is also why snack containers cube out long before they hit a weight limit. Layer three: carton board and stacking strength

A single-wall carton in modest board grade will hold 3.7 kg of crackers perfectly well on a shelf. The question is what happens when it is the bottom carton in a stack seven high, in 32°C ambient with high humidity, for weeks. Corrugated board loses a substantial share of its compression strength as it takes up moisture from the air, and a container in the tropics is a humid place.

What to ask about:

  • Board specification. Single-wall versus double-wall, and the flute type. Double-wall costs more per carton and eats a little internal volume, but for stacks above roughly five or six high it usually pays for itself.
  • Edge crush resistance. Compression strength comes from the carton's vertical edges, so anything that damages a corner — a dropped pallet, a strap pulled too tight — costs more strength than a dented face.
  • Print and coating. Heavy solid-ink coverage can weaken board slightly. It also makes scuffing more visible, which affects how a receiving warehouse judges condition.
  • Stack limits marked on the carton. Simple, cheap, and it gives you something to point at when a warehouse stacks twelve high.

Layer four: palletising or floor loading

Palletised cargo is easier to handle, faster to unload, and much less likely to be dropped. It also costs you volume: pallets consume floor height and the footprint rarely matches the container width perfectly. Floor loading maximises cartons per container but means every carton is handled by hand, twice, by people who are being paid by the container.

For a light, high-volume, fragile snack the honest answer depends on your destination. If you unload into an automated DC, palletise and accept fewer cartons. If you have cheap labour at destination and margin is tight, floor loading with tight, wall-to-wall stowage and dunnage bags in the door void is workable — and tight stowage genuinely protects product, because cargo that cannot move cannot abrade.

Either way, insist on:

  • Cartons loaded with no lateral gaps; airbags or void fill where a gap is unavoidable
  • Nothing heavy loaded on top of snack cartons in a mixed consolidation
  • A container inspection before loading: dry, clean, no odour, no light through the roof
  • Photographs of the loaded container before doors close, and of the doorway stow

Setting a breakage standard before you order

Every brittle snack arrives with some breakage. Pretending otherwise creates disputes. It is better to agree, in writing, what counts as acceptable — for example a stated percentage of packs with significant fragmentation — and how it will be assessed on arrival. Then agree the remedy: credit, replacement in the next shipment, or nothing below the threshold.

A trial order is the right place to calibrate this. From 100 kg net — roughly 27 cartons of 185 g or 45 cartons of 50 g — you can ship on the same film, carton and stow you would use at container scale, open cartons from the top, middle and bottom of the stack, and measure what actually arrives. That result should then set the specification for your first full container.

Where private label changes the equation

If you are commissioning a private-label product, packaging is a design decision, not just a protection decision. Retail buyers ask for shelf-ready cases, window panels, hanging holes, smaller pack weights and different carton counts. Some of those requests reduce protection. A window panel is a weak point in a barrier film. A shelf-ready case with a tear-off front is structurally weaker than a closed carton.

None of these are automatic refusals — they just need to be traded off deliberately.
