The single most useful thing to understand about snack container loading is that you will almost never reach the weight limit. A 20ft container is rated for roughly 28 tonnes of cargo. Load it with cheese crackers and you will close the doors at around four tonnes. The container is full — of air, packaging and product in that order. Everything about how you price, book and plan the shipment follows from that.
This matters because buyers new to snacks often budget freight the way they budget for rice, sugar or frozen goods, where a container is a weight problem. With crackers it is a cube problem. Get the arithmetic right and you can compare quotations properly, choose between pack formats on evidence, and avoid the unpleasant surprise of a first shipment where sea freight is a larger share of landed cost than the product itself.
The numbers for a real snack carton
Our two retail formats — a 185 g family pack and a 50 g single-serve — share the same shipper: 43 x 34 x 30 cm. That carton occupies 0.0439 m³. What changes is how much product fits inside it.

Look at the last row. The same 40ft container carries about 5.8 tonnes of crackers in family packs but only 3.5 tonnes in single-serves — around 64 per cent more product for the identical freight bill. That is not a packing inefficiency to be fixed; it is simply what happens when you put more air and more laminate around smaller portions.
Freight cost per pack, and per kilo of product
The honest way to compare formats is to divide your all-in freight and origin charges by the number of packs, then again by the product weight. Suppose your door-to-port cost for a 40ft came to a round figure of USD 3,000. In 185 g that is about USD 0.096 per pack, or USD 0.52 per kilo of crackers. In 50 g it is about USD 0.043 per pack — cheaper per unit, which looks attractive — but USD 0.85 per kilo of product, roughly 60 per cent more.
Neither answer is wrong. Single-serves usually carry a much higher retail price per kilo, so they can absorb it. The point is to run the calculation before you commit to a format, not after the pro forma invoice is signed. If you are selling into convenience or impulse channels, the extra freight per kilo is the cost of entry. If you are selling to supermarkets on shelf price, the family pack is doing far more work per container slot.
How carriers charge low-density cargo
Full container load is straightforward: you pay for the box, whatever is in it. Below that, density decides the bill.
- LCL (groupage) sea freight is quoted on weight or measure, W/M, with one cubic metre treated as one tonne. Snack cartons at 78–115 kg/m³ will always be charged on volume. Budget on cubic metres and ignore the kilos entirely.
- Air freight uses a volumetric divisor, commonly 6,000 cm³ per kilo. Our carton measures 43,860 cm³, so it charges as about 7.3 kg against an actual 5.05 kg gross. Air is viable for samples and launch stock, not for volume snack business.
- Courier uses 5,000 cm³ per kilo on most services, which is harsher still — about 8.8 kg chargeable per carton.
A useful habit: when a forwarder quotes you "per kg", ask immediately whether that is gross or chargeable. For lightweight snacks the gap is the whole conversation.
Trial orders and the LCL reality
Our minimum is 100 kg net, which is about 27 cartons of 185 g or 45 cartons of 50 g. In cube that is roughly 1.2 m³ and 2.0 m³ respectively — a pallet or two, comfortably an LCL consignment. It is worth knowing that on very small LCL shipments the fixed charges at both ends (documentation, terminal handling, customs entry, destination deconsolidation) often exceed the ocean leg itself. Landed cost per kilo on a trial order will therefore look poor compared with a full container. That is normal, and it should not be read as the economics of the product. Floor loading, pallets and the cube you lose
The container counts above assume hand-stacked floor loading, which is standard for snack cartons out of Indonesia and gives the best cube utilisation. Palletising changes the arithmetic significantly. A 43 x 34 cm footprint does not tessellate neatly on a 120 x 100 cm pallet — you get six, sometimes seven cartons per layer with some overhang — and the pallet deck itself eats 12 to 15 cm of stacking height. Expect to lose a meaningful share of your cube, often in the region of 15 to 25 per cent, in exchange for faster discharge and easier warehouse handling.
Whether that trade is worth it depends on your receiving end. If your warehouse charges by the hour for manual devanning, or your operatives will not hand-unload 1,568 cartons, palletise and accept the lower count. If you have labour and want maximum product per container, floor load. Decide before the quotation, because the packing list, the cube and the freight all change.
Crush is the other constraint
Height stacking is limited by more than the container roof. Crackers are fragile and the pack has no structural strength, so the carton board carries everything. Stack too high in a hot container and the bottom tier deforms, which shows up as broken product at the far end. We build the shipper to take the stack heights we quote, but if you ask for a custom pack size — which we do offer as part of private label work — the carton has to be re-specified alongside it. A new pack size is never just a printing change; it is a new cube, a new carton count and a new loading plan.
What to confirm before you book
- Carton external dimensions and cube, in writing, on the pro forma.
- Cartons per container, and whether that figure assumes floor loading or pallets.
- Gross and net weight per carton, so your customs entry and the bill of lading agree.
- Whether your forwarder is quoting W/M or gross weight on LCL.
- Loading port — we ship from Semarang (Tanjung Emas) or Jakarta (Tanjung Priok), and the inland leg differs between them.
- Incoterm. On FOB you control and pay the ocean leg and carry the cube risk yourself; on CFR or CIF we quote it in. For low-density cargo, get both and compare.
